Laundromat Art Space is proud to present “The New Normal”, a group exhibition curated by Erin Parish. “The New Normal” addresses the idea that current environmental issues have become so prevalent as to become part of the cultural norm, informing humanity’s vision and concept of reality. Each artist in the show presents work which is a response to or iteration of this new normal, inherently qualified by the dramatically changing and destructive environmental conditions humanity now faces on planet earth.

Representing an apocalyptic future, David La Chapelle’s photograph “Gas Shell” evinces the eerie, transgressive impropriety of a gas station glowing ominously in the heart of a night-time forest while Christin Paige Minnotte’s haunting photograph “Disposable Ethic: plastic bags”, evokes a preserved human specimen suspended in a suffocating accumulation of plastic bags, as if some alien future were looking to it for a snapshot of human history. Invoking a more intimate approach to environment by transmuting its tangible, mundane elements into aspirational, intangible life, Andres Martinez repurposes discarded household materials into sculptures that are akin to loving cultural effigies, infusing and revitalizing throw-away objects with the existential value of daily, human life, while Annie Blazejack and Geddes Levenson seek to enable a transcendence of our known or inhabited physical world by the performative transformation of their bedsheets, perhaps symbols of the freed mind in sleep, into vessels for intergalactic space travel unencumbered by physics. – Christin Paige Minnotte
